i5 4690k vs i7 4790k

Now, I've heard people say an i5 is all that's REALLY needed for most gaming, and i7 for video rendering and all that jazz. However, I'm somewhat of a budding digital artist, which I tend to do in my spare time (besides gaming) would an i5 be suitable, or should I fork out the extra for the i7?For software, I use MS and PS, but I don't really do anything taxing on them, just basic sketches..no video/photo editing. As far as multi tasking goes also, I'll have the basic 'one main program/game running with the usual background apps such as steam and spotify, with a browser loaded with a few tabs. Nothing intensive.

Edit; Not sure if it's really relevant, but the site I'll be buying it from will OC it as standard.

Question really is, can you afford it? Performance gains exist, but it's minimal. But if you can afford it, go ahead. The small things add up quickly to big performance boosts.

I could afford it, technically. But the question remains is it really worth it? if it's a case of the '2% fps increase' I've seen in other threads, it's hard to justify. However, as wrote I don't plan to use it exclusively for gaming, but also for digital art, however basic that may be. Will it make much of a difference for these programs with such...for lack of a better word, low usage? (Aka, non photo/video work)

Technically, there isnt anything the i7 can do that the i5 cannot, but there are some cases where the i7 can do them tasks faster.

So yeah the i5 will deal with Photoshop just fine.

It won't make a huge difference, but it will still be faster. You'll get better performance when multitasking more so. Thing is, if you get the i7, you'll never wonder if it was a better choice. Gaming will be a smaller difference, unless you are streaming.

Hmm, true enough I guess, the 'peace of mind' factor plays a big part I guess, since I'll probably end up streaming eventually using some new software I picked up (Facerig, tremendous fun) and a rather lucky alpha key (HOTS) so I guess, with respect to Rob's opinion, I'll wait a few more weeks, get the i7 (and probably some more ram while I'm at it) Purely because I'm the sort of person who the 'what if' will drive crazy 6 months down the line. Thanks for the advice folks.

Not a bad decision at all, I would do the same.

Good luck.
