Home Media Server

Hey,

I am looking to upgrade my very dated home server.

My current one was only for file hosting without raid or virtual machines.

I am interested in using PLEX as I have 4 smart TV's through the house and I also do some encoding and converting media files.

I am currently using an old E6550 with 4GB DDR2 and I want to upgrade to a more robust system.

I need the system to be potentially able to handle up to 4 people using the PLEX service and large file transfers.

I am not sure how much boost a Kavari's APU will provide and I also am looking at power efficiency as it will be on 24/7 and of course as little heat as possible.

Off-the-shelf NAS systems with file and video sharing capabilities (Synology, Asus, QNAP, etc.) uses surprisinly low-powered processors - the strongest I've seen is an Intel i3. Most are Atom, Celeron and those low-powered units.

In general I believe that Intel has a distinct advantage when it comes to low-power processors - the only advantage I ever see for the AMD devices are their price.

I concur with @Karsten75. A new CPU and MB can save on the power over your E6550. Otherwise your current system should be able to handle your load. Your bigger problem is probably that you want to do these 4 simultaneous streams wirelessly. You probably can't do that. With a full wired network, you wouldn't have a problem.

Indeed, networking is probably a major issue. Bear in mind, however, that the new 802.11ac standard has higher bandwidth than Ethernet. Read something about that just yesterday.

The OP would have to have multiple AC access points near the TVs and, depending on the age, the TVs may only be 2.4Ghz. Simple consistent network throughput is best achieved on standard cat5e network cable...

I don't disagree. I was merely pointing out a new trend. In my own hose, most devices are near Ethernet switches, but a few run off wireless bridges.
