cannot send or receive SMTP on Exchange 2003

We are using Exchange 2003 with Postini as our outside filter. As of noon yesterday we have been unable to send or receive mail outside the domain. Postini has a BLOCKED message because of DHA's.

Reporting-MTA: dns;xxx.xxx.xxx.org

Final-Recipient: rfc822;uuu@uuu.net
Action: failed
Status: 5.1.8
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550 5.1.8 <yyy@xxx.org>... Sender address verification failed

From that external machine, use NSLOOKUP to view MX records:

   nslookup

> set type=MX

> yourdomain.com

Response should be the 'a' records and ip address(es) of your MX records in order.

have you ring Postini  for help?

Unfortunately we use them through a small local provider with poor support. That will end tomorrow.

Sender address verification failed means that you have your MX record pointing to some where and the spam filtering reject your verification based on some reason....

it is hard to troubleshoot if i don have your domain name

Go to

www.dnsstuff.com

, you can get a free lookup of all of your records.  Make sure your MX record and your other mail records are correct.

MX records are fine. I still suspect Postini. Looks like DNS problems between them and the folks who have our NS.

From outside your network can you Telnet to your Exchange servers public IP on port 25?

0
August 16, 2011

Yes, we can.

August 16, 2011

Ok, can you send a test message from that telnet session?

can you do a reverse DNS on your IP?

alot of things can happen if you have ender address verification failed, and it is not exchange problem.

It was a combination of DNS changes that someone made in AD, and a siege of Directory Harvest Attacks on an old and over-taxed server. Thanks for your help.
