Bottleneck caused by obsolete Motherboard and CPU?

First, I'd like to start with my current specs:

+Motherboard: Foxconn H81MX/H81MX-D

+CPU: Intel Pentium G3420 3.20 GHz (2 CPUs)

+RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8Gbx1 1333MHz

+GPU: Gainward NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2GB DDR5

+Storage: Seagate Barracuda HDD 2TB 1200rpm

Seagate Barracuda HDD 500GB 7000rpm (OS-installed)

+OS: Window 10 Pro x64

I was bought my PC in mid-2014, then upgraded with the mentioned GPU and the 2TB HDD in 2015. Since then, I've been able to play most of recent titles with relatively medium-high settings and good framerates. Some exception was GTA V and AC: Syndicate, in which I experience some stuttering and spikes during gameplay and cutscenes, especially the latter (e.g when I travelled, I had to wait for the building to render). What makes me concerned is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. With its recent patches, I usually experience spikes and stuttering which were rare during the early patches.

So my question is: Do my mobo and cpu really cause the bottleneck? I know I made bad choice with my whole system (though where I live doesn't provide better choice either). If the bottleneck is real, should I replace them with the more-updated ones (I'm planning on a skylake this summer) or wait and start saving for a laptop because I'm going to university next year and bringing a desktop with me to the city isn't a convenient choice.

Thank you very much for reading my post. Hopefully someone will help me through with my problem.

The system actually doesn't look bad to me, but GTA V is a CPU hog and would probably smooth out with an i3 or i5, and either would work in your motherboard without issue. That would be my recommendation as an upgrade.

I recommend getting a compatible i5 procesor like a i5-4460 or i5-4690. It would perform much better, particularly in games that require 4 cores like GTA V. Your current CPU is below the minimum requirements for GTA V.

Spending money on a full Sky Lake build doesn't make much sense if you already have DDR3 and a Haswell board.

Well the reason I want to replace my mobo and cpu is that I don't really trust Foxconn (last two weeks my PC continuously and almost immediately shutdown before it could get to boot screen, got freeze after 2-3 mins running,...; My PSU wasn't the culprit as I tested with another one and still got the error). And since I'm going to upgrade my system again, I want to make sure the new mobo and cpu should be as future-proof as possible, and I thought of a Skylake build, though I'm not so sure that will be a good move.

With Skylake, you wouldn't be able to reuse your RAM, but it will have more future-proofing in terms of upgrades.

FYI, Foxconn manufactures Apple's iPhones, and is builds boards for other major motherboard manufacturers sometimes (though I couln't tell you offhand which ones).

So I did a little research and came to 2 (atm) viable build available in my region:

Haswell Build: +Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz

+Asus B85M-Gamer

Skylake Build: +Intel Core i5-6600 3.3GHz

+Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x4GB

+Asus B150 Pro Gaming D3

The Skylake Build will cost more, unarguably, but will I need to overclock to achieve the full potential of this build? (It is mentioned in the descriptions of these products, something like "Designed for high-performance overclocking")

I'm not sure which boards it applies to, but non-K overclocking in some cases disables temperature monitoring and a lot of power management features. I probably wouldn't.

You certainly could get another 10-15% performance out of the 6600, but you'd probably want to buy an aftermarket cooler too, in addition to (probably) losing the ability to monitor temperature, and power some power management.

Bear in mind that if you change your motherboard, you'll likely lose activation on your copy of Windows. You'll either need to call Microsoft and beg (and they usually allow you to activate again), or purchase a new Windows license.

Thank you a lot! One last question: If I continue to use the Haswell Build, should I try to upgrade to an i7-4790 3.6GHz instead of i5-4690 3.5Ghz? Apart from the Hyper-threading feature (which is useful for rendering work like Ps, Ae, 3Ds max,..), does an i7 has any other advantages over an i5?

The i7 and i5 are built on the same die. The i5 has hyperthreading and some cache (2mb of 8 total) disabled. The extra cache can help a little in certain single-threaded loads, but mostly it's there because of hyperthreading.

In terms of gaming, a handful of games show improvement with an i7 over an i5, but for the most part both will provide an identical experience. For productivity work, the i7 can really stretch its legs.

Be aware that hyperthreading is more robust, and provides more improvement in Skylake, due to it being a wider core.

I appreciate the help very much! Seems like I still have time to consider my final build.
