Amd Athlon II X3 435 Unlock

0
June 27, 2016

Hi guys, I was wondering if you could help me unlock my CPU. I heard that my proc and be unlocked to a Phenom II Quad Core...but before that, I must know how would this affect my system(increased power consumption/performance/stability). I have never done an overclock so I'm kind of new to this...

System:

Gigabyte GA-M720-US3

Amd Radeon Athlon II 435

Sapphire Radeon 7850 OC 2GB GDDR5

2GB DDR2 RAM

250GB Seagate Baracuda 7200

420W Spire Jewel PSU

I have never updated the BIOS if that's important.

Are you prepared to risk bricking your CPU and throwing it away if it fails?

If not, DO NOT DO IT.

Well is it worth it? Or there isn't such a difference between an Athlon II and a Phenom II

It depends on what you are trying to improve.

What do you do?

For what specifically do you want improved performance?

Do you trust your PSU?

Do you have aftermarket cooling just incase?

If possible, I'd want better gaming performance. Regarding the PSU, it's only 1 month old and the CPU should only consume 96w so it SHOULD be enough. And no, i have only the original cooler.

Gaming performance will not improve significantly by unlocking the CPU, but it depends on the game? Some rare cases it does help.

What games?

Still isn't worth the risk unless you can replace the CPU, in which case you would not be asking this question in the first place.

:)

Aftermarket cooling would be a must if you were to attempt to unlock it, some unlocks can heatspike badly.

It all depends on the application. Applications that are cpu intensive and are highly threaded will benefit from the added core. In many games it will not make much of a difference.

I have an Athlon II x 3 445 that has been unlocked for about 4 years now without any issues. However it seems that only about 50% have success unlocking these chips. Only one way to see if you have a usable locked core and that is to attempt to unlock it.

The process is really very simple. Go into your bios and select the appropriate core unlocking feature of your motherboard and reboot. If it manages to boot run stress tests to check stability and temperatures. If it failed to boot sometimes adding a tick or two to your CPU voltage is needed. If all this fails then most likely your locked core is faulty and their is nothing that can be done. Just go back into your bios and disable the core unlock feature.

Good luck!

I don't have a specific game in mind, I was hoping that it would be an overall performance increase. So do I absolutely need an special cooler?

So you're saying that there isn't really a danger if I'd try to unlock. But can you be a little more detailed about the steps that I have to take please?

NEED no, suggest, yes.

Theres always a risk involved, minimizing risk is a solid way to go about these things.

There is always a risk however core unlocking seems to only have very rare occurrence of catastrophe and generally it is as simple as enabling/disabling the motherboards unlock feature.

I am not familiar with your model of motherboard but this is what I found. "In the BIOS you can use a hidden option Ctrl-F1 to enter Advanced Chipset Features and then you can enable Nvidia Core Calibration and turn on the fourth core in this triple core processor."

So I'll try to do the same thing. But first, I need to know what to do in case it doesn't boot or something like this

0
June 27, 2016

Worst case scenario and you cannot boot into your bios reset your bios by unplugging your PC and removing your bios battery for a minute. This will cause your bios to reset to its original settings.

Ok. I tried to press Ctrl+F1 but the screen just flickered for 1 sec and nothing happened. Should I update my bios? I read that some users updated theirs and then it worked. But how can I do that? Here is the link to the update section of my motherboard

Also I typed msinfo32 and it says that I have the F6 update. There is a newer one available so I thought that might help
